The Bluejays

The bluejays have discovered my Critter Log. Each morning they check it out and eat some peanutbutter "birdcake" out of the holes where I stuffed it.  The log I chose has a couple of snag branches on it and that gives them a place to perch.  I didn't realize when I grabbed the log out of the firewood pile how important those snags would be.

The blue jays are a big bird when you compare them to sparrows or wrens.  I know that blue jays have a reputation for being pesky but these haven't been pests at all.  They come early in the morning and then go somewhere else.

They are very welcome at my feeders.  I do love to see them.

If that thing is still hanging it has outlived our initial predictions for it to fall down and will likely survive for some time to come. I'm pleased. I knocked it together pretty quickly and was concerned it wouldn't last.

You shouldn't listen to naysayers! I told you I thought it looked like it would hold. No kids have tried to do gymnastics on it but you should see the chipmunks and squirrels. The bluejays are very sedate. We now have an ear of corn hanging on a string from one of the spurs and the squirrels have done some interesting gymnastic feats to get the corn, but the chipmunks are really a riot. Today I was watching one hang onto the ear of corn and since he's so light, compared to the squirrel, the ear of corn was spinning around and he was hanging on and trying to get those kernals of corn. I loved watching the show!

Bluejays! Oh, they're so pretty. When I first started feeding birds in our condo 15 years ago, I was visited by a bluejay. I definitely heard it before I saw it -- couldn't believe how LOUD they are. After he/she had its first taste of peanuts, I was awakened each morning by an ear-shattering squawk for breakfast. I haven't had once since. Pity.

That is a pity. It's sort of neat to have a little critter insist that we feed him! We love to feed the critters!
