First Day of School
We live across the street from an elementary school. Today is the first day of school for the new year. My friend, the librarian, has been back to school for two weeks. The rest of the teachers have been back to school for two days. Now it's the kids' turn. It's interesting to watch all the cars bringing the kids for their first day back.
Naomi, a fifth grader in the school across the street, went with us on our trip to Erie yesterday. She told me that she knows who her new teacher is. They have a new principal this year, and he went to school with her mom. She wanted to buy some new school supplies but her mom thought they should wait till they found out if there was going to be any requirements for her class this year. I wish I could wave to Naomi this morning as she goes into school. She was feeling that edge of "first day" newness and excitement.
Have a great school day, Naomi!

at 8/26/2004 11:43:57 AM- They really are butterflies on the first day, aren't they! Or worse, sometimes. You should try being the teacher! Sometimes on the first day of school I'd be so tense, I'd have to have Instant Carnation for breakfast! I knew I had to have breakfast but couldn't eat a thing, however, I could drink the instant breakfast. Those butterflies soon fly away, unless you have a bad personality conflict in a teacher-student situation, and we sure hope that won't happen for Naomi.

at 8/26/2004 5:40:38 PM- Why is everybody starting school so late? I started about a month ago, our local school started 10 days ago (and they had pushed back the start date too!) and Souron doesn't start till next week. I used to think that school started at the end of July, how very wrong I was!

I remember those First Day Butterflies like they were yesterday; particularly if it was a brand new school. All the little ones in the first grade are usually more comfortable than the parents though. So many tears in the corners of Moms' eyes.
