If You Can't Be Early

Today I couldn't do my grocery shopping early as I did earlier this week. Instead, I worked through the day till evening.  I went shopping at Save-A-Lot, which closes at 9.  The store was almost empty.  I love shopping like that.  I've decided that a good maxim to follow is this:  If you can't be early, it's better to go late.  That probably isn't good advice for meetings and appointments but it certainly works well for grocery shopping. Just don't be so late that the store is closed!

I always mistakenly assume that dinnertime is a good time to go, thinking that surely everyone is home having dinner. Well, if I'm not, then chances are lots of others aren't either. It always ends up being a zoo.

Dinner time shopping, --I've been there. It is harder to shop when there's lots of people in the aisles, each moving at a different pace, some standing and talking and not moving at all. And yet, quite often the middle of the day would be a convenient time to be out shopping.

In the military, the motto was, "If you're not 15 minutes early, you're late." Once it was time to start a briefing, they started it. If anyone walked in after the briefing started, the person giving the presentation would make it very clear that it was unacceptable to walk in like that and interrupt the meeting. Sometimes they would say something. Sometimes they would just stop and stare at the offender.

On the other hand, if someone completely missed a briefing that was for a large group, no one would notice that they weren't there, and they would get away free. So for large meetings, if you found that you were late, you were always better off to just leave and miss the whole thing rather than walk in late and make a spectacle of yourself.

But that strategy probably isn't good for grocery shopping.

    Best regards,
    J.W. Stoker

Strategy for grocery shopping seems to be in a different category. That's a relief!

Remember in high school when you were a tiny bit late to home room three times you got detention, but if you missed an hour or so, there was no problem? So if it was your third time to be late, you were better off in the long run, to skip the whole class and then show up. Maybe principals draw on a militry background.

I once heard about a lens grinder who fell into his machine and made a spectacle of himself, but I don't know if he was late or not.

You make me chuckle! He may have become the late Mr. Lens Grinder.
