Walkers

The last time I was at Wal-mart, it was fairly early in the morning.  When we came into the building, I saw a man and woman walking down the aisle, away from where I was.  They were holding hands and walking briskly.  After we'd made a few selections and we were in the produce section, I saw them coming toward me and suddenly I realized what was happening.  As they neared me, I said enthusiastically, "Walkers!"  The woman was surprised. "What?" she asked.  "You're taking a walk!" I said.  And the man immediately chimed in, "Yes, that's what we're doing."  He said that they like getting their walk in during the early morning and they enjoyed the climate control that they had in the store.  They said that they had learned that four times around the store added up to one mile.  They make it a practice to walk regularly.  It was fun talking to them.

My husband and I used to join the Mall Walkers on Saturday mornings. Our Mall opens at 6am to accomodate the walkers. Twice around equals 1.5 miles. Many retired couples walk together every day -- then a group of them sit in the food court and enjoy a visit and coffee. I always imagined we would be part of the group when we retired. I don't really enjoy the walks alone. Now I prefer getting my exercise with a Leslie Sasone "Walk Away the Pounds" video. She offers just the motivation, encouragement and simple steps I need to start my day. I do enjoy a casual stroll around the Mall, or Walmart, or almost any shopping area :)

I know that there are mall walker clubs but it really tickled me to realize that these two people were there at the store just to get exercise. And they looked like they were really loving it. I learned last night that they are a couple who live down the street from me, just a couple blocks, people we delivered papers to when my boys had the paper route, but I hadn't recognized them. I hadn't seen them for years. I wonder if they had recognized me when we spoke to each other in the store. Brenda, I'm so sorry about your broken dreams. I know something about that. It's hard to let go of those dreams.

And it's so much safer than risking slipping on ice or gravel. I think it's also a great way to browse at a quick pace without spending a nickel. What a great idea :)
