It's for the Birds

I didn't go outside and shovel yesterday, nor did I refill the bird feeder.  I saw that there was still some food there and I did sprinkle a couple of handfuls for them to make sure they had enough but I didn't do anything much.  Today, it still looked like there was food scattered underneath the feeder but I decided to get out there and refill the blue feeder and also put more peanut butter in the critter log.  It's been empty for a while.

It wasn't easy filling the holes in the critter log, because of the cold.  But I was glad that I did it because when I came into the house and put the phone back in its cradle, I looked out the window and there was a flock of at least three dozen little birds feeding at the feeder and under it.  And, there were two little woodpeckers at the critter log!

Where were they before?  I didn't see them watching me but someone was watching!  I think the birds must have communication signals that I don't know about.

I almost got to see some birds on my porch!  I wasn't thinking about birds on the porch and just opened the door without looking out first and there was a whir of wings and whoever had been there flew away.  I'll have to start peeking out there more often, quietly, and probably I'll see them.  They are hungry today!

Can you imagine eating seeds like they do?  How can those tiny seeds give them the fuel energy they need in this cold weather?

That's a very good question, Nancy. It does make you wonder how those tiny seeds keep the birds going.

I was reading your Sean stories, and was reminded of a time when my daughter was in 1st grade. An older lady neighbor took her out to dinner one night to an Italian restaurant. On the way home, Patti said to the lady "Thank you very much for taking me, but the next time can we go someplace that has the lights on so we can see what we're eating." Mrs. Koger got the biggest kick out of that. That's my girl, always outspoken. Not like me, oh no!! :)

Sally, my blog comments thing is still not working entirely right. Don't worry about multiple comments. I'm sure Ben will get it straightened out in time. I certainly have no idea how to do it. So, Patti doesn't like candle light! I know the feeling sometimes.
