Magic Baking Bowl

Many years ago when my mom was visiting me, she was baking for me and a little boy from our neighborhood came in to visit and talked to her. He told her that his mom could take an empty bowl and fill it up and make the best cookies from it. That idea intrigued me.

Years later Marlin and I were in a store that specializes in supplies for cooks. I saw there this big stoneware bowl, beige with vivid blue lines running around its circumfrence. I pointed it out to Marlin and told him how much I liked it. He wanted to buy it for me but I told him that I hadn't meant for him to buy it, I just wanted him to know that I really liked it. While I looked at other things, he bought the bowl and when we got home, he gave me the bowl.

I've always thought of it as my magic bowl, that I start out with it empty and fill it up with ingredients and the most wonderful things come out of it. Today I used my magic bowl again, after months and months of not using it at all. I made cinnamon rolls. I filled it part way full with flour and yeast and eggs and milk and let it alone for a while and it soon was full to the top! The rolls just came out of the oven a few minutes ago and they are wonderful!

I love to use my magic baking bowl! I wish I had more people here tonight to help eat these rolls. Perhaps I can give some away tomorrow morning.

Sally, I really didn't mean for Marlin to buy me that bowl, but I've always been glad that he did. At first after he died I didn't want to use it, but now I've arrived at the point where using it felt really good and seemed special to me. I'm really glad to have it now.

I have ALWAYS wanted one of those big stoneware bowls, Only mine has RED stripes or Yellow or Both. But I would take blue. or Green. Just has to be BIG! great story. ANd you could always send some buns this way. ;)

I dont jump in, but I do walk in fast, and then dunk under to get wet all at once. It is much better.

Mary Lou, I really understand why you would not want to join the crowd at the beach at 3 in the afternoon to save a place to see fireworks at dusk. I'm sure they must be spectacular, but we can now remember spectacular and the allure of being home or close to home right after the fireworks is too strong. Good choice.

I forgo (ed) (went) whatever the fireworks this year too. THe big ones were last night, and you have to get to the beach about 3 in the afternoon to get a place anywhere close, and since I can not walk far, I said Nope! We went to my Nephew's wedding yesterday and I came home pooped. SO I went to bed early and watched the neighbors blow up the world through my bedroom window. I Am so glad the woods did not catch fire.

Lorraine, I can understand your dismay at that meal! I can't make myself eat liver, but I could eat beets, at least a very small portion. Our tastes do change. I have learned to eat, and usually like, carrots and sweet potatoes. When I was a kid I didn't like watermelon, but now I like it, so I know our tastes do change.

I used to hate beets as a kid. My mom always served them with liver and onions, which actually used to make me gag. I would sit at the table for hours because I wouldn't eat them and my parents were part of the "clean plate club." Now I like pickled beets. Sometimes our taste for certain things change.

I have a whole backyard of those...my renters let them all die, and now they are pretty in their own way, so I just left them.

Mary Lou, that's exciting news. It took such a long time, didn't it! As it grows taller, you can take a cutting from it and root it and the plant will start branching out. It will bleed a milky liquid and you need to let that dry a day or two before you put it into water to root. It should grow beautifully now.
