That Busy Snowplow

If it weren't for the snowplow socking the end of the driveway full of heavy, plowed snow, my work yesterday in the late afternoon would have been enough for this morning.  But the snowplow came through, probably several passes, and there was that wall of snow a foot deep at the street and extending three or four feet into the driveway.  It was the hardest shoveling I've had to do so far.

However, I do know about lifting with my knees and working slowly.  I'm glad to report that I've had no ill effects from shoveling.  It hasn't made me sore or given me aches nor pains.  So, while it takes a lot of time that I would rather be spending indoors with a hot cuppa and reading something, it has probably been good for me to have had this exercise.

This morning while I was working outdoors, I heard an unusual sound for this time of year.  It was geese flying by. There against the gray clouds in the sky was a flock of about two dozen geese flying overhead.  My neighbor in the next block, Dan, was out shoveling also, and we both stopped what we were doing and watched the geese.  How much we enjoy seeing God's creatures who share the world with us.  I wondered about the geese.  Were they late in leaving or early in coming back?  I hope they will be OK.

Dont you have a snow blower? I would think that would be a MUST up there.

No, I don't have one. My neighbor has one and often does our sidewalk and driveway but he's vacationing in Florida for two weeks. He picked a good time to be away from our snow and cold. Of course, it will probably still be snowy and cold when they return at the end of this week.

A flock of geese always commands my attention too. It's such a brief moment that they're there and audible. If I hear them flying overhead while I'm inside, I'll usually run to the back to see if I can catch sight of them.

One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen was a massive flock of probably 200 hundred or more leaving their feeding grounds just before sunset. I'll never forget the sight of all those dark shapes flying in V formations against the orange/pink of the horizon.

That would be awesome to see a flock of about 200 geese. They are elegant in flight.

One interesting thing about geese in formation. Have you ever noticed that one side of the "V" is always longer than the other? Do you know the reason? It's because one side has more geese in it. :)

That's exactly right! One side is usually longer than the other. That was true this morning. Most of the geese were stretched out one behind the other on the right side of the formation. My dad would have loved your comment!
